Weekend: Accomplishments Abound

Three groups celebrate this weekend’s accomplishments this week.

Speech and Debate competed in the Maryville Kinman Classic Speech and Debate Tournament, held at Maryville High School.

Boys Swim & Dive had a great showing at its Varsity Swim/Dive Championship this past weekend.

Ben Place: 2^nd in the 100 Fly and 4^th in the 100 Back
Xavier Cavanaugh: 7^th in the 50 Free and 8^th in the 100 Free
Christopher Lynn: 7^th in the 200 Free and 4^th in the 500 Free
Alex Guglielmi: 11^th in the 50 Free and 12^th in the 100 Free
Reagan Compton: Conference Champion in Diving

Students dive into history with “Salt to the Sea.” Alik, a member of the freshmen book club, shared, “this book really makes you feel the weight of history and the power of survival stories.” The club meets weekly to discuss themes of resilience and humanity in literature.

Junior James Mueller works on an assignment regarding the current project in AP Government. The goal is to create an interactive way for citizens to learn about the Declaration of Independence. “The possibility of the project genuinely being created and put somewhere in the community is fun,” Mueller said.

AP Government Challenges Creativity

On Thursday, Dec.5, junior Luke Robinett plays his bass looking toward his director Erick Theno. This is the symphonic orchestra, the elite of string instruments. They played “Plowing Through the Snow” at this part of their Christmas concert. Which is why there’s a Santa hat. “I thought we did really good,” Robinett said. “We’ve been working a lot on intonation, recently, which really, I think really helped. And then I think just kind of the work we’ve put in, we’ve all been on the same page, just working hard.”

Symphonic Orchestra Plays Holiday Concert

In room 250, the American Sign Language Club meets on Tuesday, Nov. 14, to learn the rest of the alphabet, how to introduce themselves, and basic greetings. Freshman Lilyana Guising introduces herself in ASL to freshman Eloise Camarda. Guising and Camarda were here for broadcasting but decided to join in learning. “The first thing we learned is class was ‘Hello, my name is, and then fingerspell your name,” sponsor Robin Marsh said.

ASL club learns signs and respect for the community

Freshman Gage Eischen warms up with freshman William Sprouse. Each wrestler warms up with jogging, sprinting and hand fighting to make sure they are prepared for their match. “I focus on breathing before a match because it helps me stay calm, and warming up before helps my body get ready and warmed for the match,” Eischen said.

Girls Basketball Starts Season

Junior Sierra Geary and senior Lilli Everley scream after their teammate scores on a layup during the preseason jamboree on Tuesday, Nov. 19. "I think that we have a great group of girls and we're working very hard. I think that we're gonna have a great year. with lots of results." The Oakies played their first regular season game Monday, Nov. 25 against Raytown and won the game 69-30.
