Tardy sweeps teach life skills

Tardy sweeps are a fairly new thing at Oak Park. Although there have been many complaints from students, this is why they actually aren’t that bad.

Tardy sweeps make it easier to get to class on time, when students are out on the hall walking to their class and rumors there might be a tardy sweep buzz, the first instinct is to get to class halls start to clear once the two-minute bell rings as people don’t want to be late to class. Because there are fewer people in the halls it’s easier to get through doorways and stairs making it easier to get to class on time.

Also class starts on time since fewer kids are late to class giving students and teachers more time to finish what was planned in class and preventing homework from what wasn’t finished. Staying ahead in class shouldn’t be dictated by students getting to class to make class start.

Tardy sweeps single out who can and can’t follow rules, getting to class on time it’s always the same kids who are late and have to go through the humiliating process of being turned away and sent to the theater. It’s a lesson being taught showing  school is preparing students for the real world and in the real world, actions have consequences.

However, tardy sweeps are frustrating when it comes to students going to the bathroom during passing time. With the bathrooms being locked, it makes students waste their time trying to find another bathroom that’s open, then getting to class if there’s not a line in the bathroom.

Though they may seem awful, tardy sweeps have been put in place for good reason, they show how to follow rules in a professional setting early on.
