As the weather begins to warm up in late February, the spring sports season will begin as well. However, for athletes who intend to join a sport in the spring, preseason workouts take place all through the winter in order to prepare for a strong end to the school season.
Preseason workouts are a good way to dip your toes into the pool of the sport of your choosing. They allow you to get to know the coaching staff, meet and bond with other players, and most of all, condition so that come the first week of tryouts, players are ready to compete.
There are several sports people can get involved in come March, but take a look at how you can start practicing this winter to prepare!
Girls Soccer:
The girls soccer team hosts preseason conditioning workouts from 3 to 4 p.m. every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday up until the season starts. These workouts consist of running and lifting in the weight room, to also getting outside on the soccer field (weather permitting) to get touches on the ball and build team chemistry.
Why join the team?
“I think we have a very unique group where we all feel kind of at home with each other. A lot of the players that play the spring sport have played fall and winter together already, so they already have that base,” head coach Tanner Pearce said. “But even if you’re new to a sport, there’s a ton of new players that have never even played soccer before that kind of find their home with a group of people that they can hang out with and bond with even outside of the field. So if you’re looking to make connections, come on out and join us.”
Boys Volleyball:
Boys volleyball has open gyms on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. in order to prepare for the season. At open gyms, players will do drills and scrimmage to get their touch for volleyball season. There are also conditioning sessions every Tuesday from 3 to 4 p.m. meeting in the weight room. These workouts are off the ball, working on agility and strength training to become more explosive on the court.
Why join the team?
“[You should join] to become part of history, make history, and continue to break records,” head coach Jessie Michaels said.
Baseball:
Should you be interested in baseball, there is plenty of opportunity to work on your game before tryouts. There are morning conditioning sessions from 6:15 to 7:15 a.m. Monday and Wednesday mornings before school. There are also weights sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 4 p.m. When the weather allows, the team will go outside on the baseball field after school and train, replacing whatever other plan they had for the day.
Why join the team?
“We try to build a culture that is not only positive but it’s also very competitive,” head coach Joe Kinder said. “The people that you get to play with are all good people. They’re people that you can enjoy being around. You’ll have a coaching staff that’ll care about you, they’ll check in on you constantly, and always be there to support you.”
Track:
In the home stretch of January, the team will have workouts four days a week starting at 3 p.m. These workouts will prepare athletes for the track season, running, jumping, and throwing as much as possible in the preseason. These workouts will be inside when it is super cold outside, but as the temperatures warm up, the team will move outside to run on the track.
Why join the team?
“Track is a team sport, of course, everybody is on a team, but it’s kind of an individual sport. You kind of find out what you’re good at or what you like to do,” head track coach Charlie Pugh said, “You can get your friends out there have fun, and challenge yourself to break down things that you may not think you could do yet, by the time you put in the work, and you see your growth from beginning to end it’s just a rewarding feeling.”
