At the JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention in Philadelphia, Penn., three Oak Park journalists brought home wins.

The Journalism Education Association hosted the National Student Media Contests Friday, Nov. 8. NMSC results were shared on Sunday, Nov. 10.
Cambia Photo Editor junior Brian Mayer took Honorable Mention in Photo Story covering the new Homecoming Parade format at the elementary schools.
N2 Sports Broadcast Staffer senior Cooper Droegemueller earned an HM in First-Year Photo for this football photo.
“In all, 1,326 students competed in photo, broadcast, graphic design, literary magazine, design and writing contests,” according to the JEA website. “There were 537 students recognized with 92 superior, 164 excellent and 281 honorable mention awards.”
All nine of the OP journalists from Cambia yearbook, N2 Sports broadcast and The Northmen’s Log magazine said they felt they put forth their best efforts.
They look forward to taking what they learned from competing and applying it to their daily work of covering OP and making even stronger publications for their primary audience of Northmen.

The Axe’s broadcast Reporter junior Ben Hass placed Sixth for Broadcast News Story in the national NSPA Best of Show Individuals for his coverage of the new eSports team.
The National Scholastic Press Association’s Individual Best of Show entries compete against others created during the current school year. The Top 10 pieces in each category were ranked and awarded on Saturday, Nov. 9.

The JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention was attended by 3,693 students from 621 schools from all 50 states and eight countries. The convention opened Thursday, Nov. 7. Friday was contests and classes. Class sessions were also offered on Saturday.
The Northmen journalists attended their choice of classes in broadcast, photography, design, etc.; met professional journalists during “Meet with a Pro” sessions; shared ideas with students from across the country; gathered information from colleges and media organizations at the trade show; heard from keynote speaker, documentarian Matthew O. Henderson, and more.

In addition to attending convention and competing on the national stage, students explored Philadelphia by attending “Hamilton” at the Academy of Music; visiting historic sites; touring Citizens Bank Park, home of the Phillies baseball team; visiting the Rocky statue and running the 72 stairs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, just like Rocky did in the iconic scene from the 1976 movie.
