‘The Chosen’ Series Review
‘The Chosen’, a faith-based streaming series, displays Jesus’s life and historical events of the Bible in a captivating and ingenious way.
When I started this series myself, I was immediately drawn by the direct similarities in reference to the New Testament and its gospels.
Set in the first century, primarily in Judea and Galilee, the numerous props, costumes, and locations contributed to bringing this historical setting to life. The acting, script and music also served as phenomenal components to the show.
The portrayal of each of the characters was incredible. Specifically, seeing how Jesus’s disciples were gathered and how they changed over time was an experience unlike any other. Through watching it, I was able to connect and feel for the characters on a different level by seeing Jesus through the eyes of various people. There are some details that go beyond biblical accuracy such as Jesus’s humor and Matthew’s condition, Asperger’s syndrome, but I personally think they make great and fun-loving additions to the show.
Another aspect of the show I loved was being able to visually see certain passages in the Bible. Specifically, Jesus’s wine miracle, the multiplying of food in the crowd, Simon and Jesus walking on water, and the healing of the man at Bethesda Pool were eye-opening scenes to me.
This show also gave an accurate visual of life in Israel under Roman rule and the division of Samaritans and Jews within this time period.
Overall, this show brought me to the biblical times, where I was able to experience the Bible in a transportive way. It allowed me to reflect on the Bible on a deeper and emotional level.
To stream this show you can download the app to watch its three seasons for free, but the first season is also available on Netflix. Previous episodes have also been in theaters.
