On Thursday, Oct. 7 music blared over the small speakers and a line of students danced in synch to “Cupid Shuffle”. An old car, spray painted and without windows, sat in the corner, waiting for the traditional car bashing. As the students walked around the parking lot the 2010 homecoming spirit filled the air.
“The first thing that we have to do is book all of the different clubs and activities to set up tables,” StuCo advisor Bryan Edinger said. “Second, we have to get the tools needed to run the pep rally; for example, we need a light tower, DJ, and a car to smash up!”
Along with the music and pep rally traditions, some clubs and activities set up tables and booths. Art Club face painted. Theater sold cotton candy while the cheerleaders sold nachos. Band, color guard, and the Pommies performed as well. This year, all of the activity took place in the south part of the student parking lot.
“It seemed to be a little more accessible and it allowed the queen candidate parade to be more up close for the students and family members watching,” said Edinger.
FCCLA also hosted a pie throwing booth. Senior Nick Alley, junior Johnna Hensley and senior Brian Haynes took a turn at getting hit in the face with pie.
“I’m a fan of pie. Not anymore, but I was at the time, so I thought, ‘Why not?’,” Alley said.
As the annual car bashing began some of the homecoming queen nominees took the opportunity to hit some metal.
“It’s like a kick of adrenaline,” senior Hero Khizipour said. “I couldn’t have picked up that sledge hammer and I almost fell backwards. But don’t worry. I had spanks underneath my dress.”
Students may not have filled the parking lot for long because of the 7:30 p.m. choir concert, but they still turned out to show their blue on blue spirit.
“I like the music, the car smash, the people,” junior Kelcie Thomas said. “I came because I wanted to show school spirit and get pumped for the football game.”
