Sports Column: From a Softball Player
The JV softball team had a great season.
At the beginning of the season, they were not used to their new coach; this was coach Dan Backhaus’ first year of coaching softball. He coached baseball for many years before.
According to players, at first it was hard to listen to him compare softball to baseball because they are not the same. Many of the girls didn’t like the way he coached, but if one looks at the record of 13-3, they couldn’t complain. Personally, I liked coach even through the times it was very hard too.
Throughout the season, we had to have some of the C-team girls play up because some girls had shin splints, broken bones, hurt shoulders, pulled muscles, or they were sick.
Head Coach Callie Smothers said that this was the worst season for energies and being sick. Even through the hard times the JV team stuck together and had each other’s backs.
Even though the season ended, many of us still hang out and try to stay in touch. Softball was great and all, but the game isn’t the only thing that matters, it’s the friendships created and kept forever. All of the softball girls were amazing individuals, but when you put them all together they are unstoppable.
