Boeding Buzz: “Ride Along” with the laughs
Opinion by: Jake Boeding
I’ll just open with this: this movie is hard to establish as a good or bad one. As I sit here trying to think of an opening statement making a claim as to what I think about this movie, I’m stuck with just seeing a flashing, vertical black bar. Ride Along, starring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, makes the audience laugh, but also is extremely weak as well. With that being said, bear with me as you read through this review.
First off, Kevin Hart is funny. EXTREMELY funny. Previously, I had only seen him on spoof vines, but this dude is hilarious. His comedy and delivery is perfect beyond belief and really brings the movie up when it needs to be due to the blocky acting of Ice Cube. Ice Cube’s acting is almost painful to watch. It feels like each scene he is in just goes from point A to point B and has no flair, sense of direction, or creativity what so ever. Hart attempts to change this, but one man can only do so much. Another place where this film struggles is the plot. Easily predictable and dreadfully serious at points (seriously, isn’t this supposed to be a comedy?), Ride Along will leave the audience sometimes questioning: “Am I supposed to be laughing at this?”
Between Ice Cube’s acting and the mediocre plot, Ride Along starts off, and ends, with no charisma or entertainment value. Kevin Hart eventually makes the film somewhat bearable, but his efforts result in being futile, because this movie is just miserable. Not a surprise, Ride Along earns the Boeding Buzz rating of: LEAVE IT BE.
