The Cross Country team recently returned from a trip to Colorado to prepare for the upcoming season. Coach Kevin Torres answered some questions about the conditioning.
Northmen News: How long has the Cross Country team been traveling to Colorado?
Kevin Torres: We have just returned from our fourth trip to Boulder, Colorado.
NN: How did this idea come about?
KT: The summer before Matt Stull’s senior year, we had chatted about going to a camp. And, I conveyed to him, that if he wanted to do so, I would take the team some place to train. Needless to say, Matt suggested Colorado and it has been an annual trip from that point.
NN: How long was the team in Colorado for?
KT: We left June 4th and returned June 8th, which has been the standard length of time.
NN: Who attended?
KT: The student-athletes that attended were the majority of the top returning varsity and junior varsity athletes which was a great combination for all that went.
NN: What was the best part of conditioning in Colorado?
KT: Colorado has such a rich tradition for endurance athletes and fitness culture, that it is a great way to kick off the summer conditioning. The entire experience, coupled with the high altitude training and the lengthy drive, lends itself to a true team building experience.
NN: What will the team be doing for the rest of the summer?
KT: The cross country team will be working on their aerobic base in preparation for the Liberty Invitational at Stocksdale Park.
NN: How do you think the team will do this season after what you’ve seen so far?
KT: I believe that the team has a solid potential but that all is dependent on if everyone can stay healthy throughout the season. More importantly, if the team is healthy at the end of the season.
Check back during the Cross Country season for updates on the team’s progress.
