Q&A with Relay for Life captains
By: Chelsie Yokum
Northmen News: How are you and your team preparing for the Relay?
Freshman Amanda Byrum [OP Fighters]: We’re setting up some fundraisers to get to our goal, and just planning everything out for that night.
Junior Ty White [Cancer Curin’ Cowboys]: Well I’m the adapted P.E. captain. We’re preparing by trying to get everything planned from the ground up. We’re trying to get it set up in the broad spectrum of things.
Senior Alisha Mahnken [Water Pong Crew]: I created a group in my cell phone so I could send text messages to make sure my team stays up to date. Instead of going door-to-door we’re hosting a garage sale to raise our money this year, along with a bake sale.
Junior Leah Frisby [Fellowship of Christian Athletes]: I’m just encouraging them to fundraise.
Sophomore Amber Hemmie [Fighting Oakies]: We’re going to do a pancake breakfast. We’re selling tickets pretty soon.

NN: Why did you want to be a team captain?
Byrum: I really wanted to help and I wanted to do more than just be on a team.
White: It’s for a good cause and I love the kids in the [adapted P.E.] class. They deserve something extra-curricular to help out for a good cause.
Mahnken: I got thrown into being a captain last year because of an overflow of people on my original team. I liked it so much that I decided to do it again this year.
Frisby: My grandmother passed away from cancer and I just wanted to raise awareness.
Hemmie: I think it’s fun to be team captain, to help organize the team and plan the fundraisers.

NN: What challenges, if any, have you faced as a team captain?
Byrum: Definitely finding team members that would be willing to commit.
White: Turning in money. A couple of people couldn’t get the original commitment for it on time. But with what we have we’re going to be strong.
Mahnken: Just making sure everybody gets their paperwork and registration fees in on time and just making sure I’m staying up with deadlines and everything.
Frisby: Getting the team together since we only met once a week and getting them on the same page.
Hemmie: We had problems getting a chaperone and getting everyone to turn in their registration forms and money. But it all worked out.
