It’s seven in the morning, and the halls are becoming crowded with students getting ready for class, running up and down the stairs to their lockers and in and out of the cafeteria for breakfast. This week, there’s a new addition to the chaos: the journalism department is selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts every morning this week as a fundraiser for the upcoming spring national convention in Anaheim, California from Wed. April 13 to Saturday April 16.
Only four students will be accompanying journalism teacher Christina Geabhart on the trip: Northmen’s Log entertainment editor senior Tatyana Pekarsky; Northmen’s Log photo editor junior Kimberly Green; Cambia writer and senior ad designer junior Chelsie Yokum; and Cambia photo editor sophomore Sydney Bennet.
The convention is sponsored by the Journalism Education Convention and the National Scholastic Press Association, features more than 300 class sessions, sightseeing and media tours, issue seminars, media swap shops, Best of Show and Write-Off contests, exhibits, a trade show and featured speakers.
The fall convention, which was held in Kansas City this year in November, was also attended by journalism students.
“[At the fall Kansas City convention] I took mostly photography classes,” Bennet said. “I got to listen to professionals and learn a lot of new things I didn’t know before. It was fun walking around town on lunch breaks and using the techniques I just learned to take pictures of everything. So I’m excited to go on this trip and use new ideas to take pictures at the beach [in Anaheim] and the other cool surroundings.”
The money raised from the Krispy Kreme sales will go towards the convention fees, hotel costs and any other expenses for the girls attending. After two days of selling, a total of ______ has been raised.
“Any money we raise will definitely help, even if it’s not much,” Pekarsky said.
Green agrees.
“I personally think it’s a great idea,” Green said. We are selling something that more people would rather buy, instead of something like T-shirts.”
