Orchestra to Host Concert Thursday

Orchestra hosts its winter concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, in the main theater. Orchestra members have been working very hard this semester on many wonderful pieces.

These pieces include:

White Christmas,” words and music by Irving Berlin and arranged by Bruce Chase

This is a classic Christmas song, written in 1942 by Berlin. It was made to reminisce about an old-fashioned Christmas setting. This piece is one page long and will be played in the aisles of the main theater for the audiences enjoyment!

We Need A Little Christmas,” music and lyrics by Jerry Herman and arranged by Ted Ricketts

The song was first performed in the Broadway Musical “Mame” by Angela Lansbury in 1966. It was created to express how after Mame had lost her fortune in the Wall Street Crash, she decides that her young nephew Patrick, and her two household servants needed a little Christmas to cheer themselves up. This piece will be two pages long.

Themes from “The Nutcracker,” arranged by James “Red” McLeod

Three beautiful melodies from the world-famous Nutcracker Ballet are featured in this Christmas medley. Starting with Dance of the Mirlitons, McLeod smoothly segues to Waltz of the Flowers, then concludes with everyones favorite, Trepak! This piece is four pages long, and definitely a crowd favorite.

“Iditarod,” Soon Hee Newbold (Ascap)

Iditarod is actually the name of an annual long-distance sled dog race run in early March from Settler’s Bay to Nome. This riveting and explosive New York piece will take you on a journey through Alaska’s harsh landscape with the sled dogs running the Iditarod. This is Soon Hee Newbold at her very best! The piece is four wonderful and exciting pages long!
