Bonfire Tips from an Experienced Host

Bonfires can be fun and loud and a great way to be outside when it is cold, but there are a number of reported accidents that occur at bonfires.

Junior Annie Bensyl has hosted her share.

Has anything bad ever happened at one of your bonfires or a bonfire you have gone to?

“Nothing bad has ever really happened at them, they’re usually pretty chill and I hang out with chill people too so it’s always just a good time.”

Is there an adult there to supervise?

“My parents are usually home when I have bonfires, but they don’t come down to the fire pit very much, so we’re usually on our own.”

Do you stay safe and clear of the fire?

“I have a nice pit that’s surrounded by rocks and it’s about 5 feet wide and 2 feet tall.  I have a few benches that are around the pit that can be moved so when it’s colder we usually sit closer to the fire, but still a safe distance from the fire.”

How do you stop the fire?

“I’m actually pretty bad about putting the fire out.  By the time we’re done, the fire usually dies down quite a bit so sometimes I just leave it to die out overnight.  Most of the time I have a bucket of water I pour on it to help put it out before going back inside.”
