It’s not only a new season for sports; it’s also a new season for cheerleading. Since Tuesday, Nov. 15 Cheerleading clinics have been talking place after school in the west mezzanine. “What are these clinics?” one may wonder. They are sort of like training sessions; they prepare aspiring cheerleaders for tryouts. According to current cheerleaders that attended prior clinics it is really helpful.
“They teach you a cheer, sometimes a dance or a stunt, you’ll do jumps and learn the fight song,” sophomore Sierra Bibler said.
There have actually been a large number of girls coming to try out, with over 30 girls the first day. Unfortunately, there are only about four spots available. There are so many uniforms and once those are filled that’s it; no one else can join until a member leaves and a space opens up.
“We had a much bigger turn out than expected,” Coach Megan Ives said.
Ives expressed her remorse and wished that there had been such a turn out at the beginning of the year when there were many more openings.
As the semester begins to wind down, people that were previously busy now have a lot of time for new activities.
“At semester break there is a break between the football and volleyball season and basketball season,” said Ives, “We pick up new people that want to cheer that maybe played volleyball before.”
With so many contenders and so few openings it is clear that Ives and the other coaches have some tough choices to make.
However, at the start of next year there will be a few more possible openings and Ives and members of the squad are hopeful that there will be an even bigger number of clinic participants then.
