Gears of War’s multiplayer is fantastic, simply put. While the versus mode can be a bit frustrating, the iconic “Horde” mode and brand new “Beast” mode make the $60 game worth it.
While versus does provide some nice competition every once in awhile, it inevitably isn’t that great. The maps are nicely designed and the characters look great, but that’s about it. The matches are incredibly lopsided, so you are either getting mutilated beyond belief, or you are cruising your way to victory in a matter of seconds. So, if you suck like me, you’re out of luck.
However, despite the disappointment in versus mode, “Horde” mode provides a multiplayer experience that I can personally say has been the best ever. You and four other players are put up against wave after wave of locusts (the game’s antagonists), and must defend your base by upgrading barriers, building turrets, and a whole bunch of other blood busting contraptions. And it’s an absolute blast. The only negative thing I can say about “Horde” mode is the boss waves. But, even then, they aren’t frustratingly hard, they just cause you to plan out a strategy with your team rather just going in guns blazing.
A new mode to the multiplayer experience that GoW 3 brings to the table is “Beast” mode. “Beast” mode makes you the locusts this time around and your goal is to kill the humans. This mode is not nearly as fun as “Horde” mode, but still can provide an enjoyable experience. It’s fun to be all the baddies that you spent most of your time killing for a change honestly. Whether you’re a tiny little bug that can explode, causing mass damage or a giant spider creature that can go underground to heal itself, “Beast” mode adds a new option for multiplayer lovers.
While the versus mode does in a word, suck, “Horde” and “Beast” mode pick up the slack and leave a happy impression on the players. Overall, I give the multiplayer experience of Gears of War 3 four logs.
